PROF. FESTUS IYAYI, FORMER ASUU PRESIDENT DIES

 The sixty-six years old UNIBEN lecturer died in a motor vehicle accident on his to an executive meeting in Kano to further negotiate with the President, regarding the suspension of the four-months Strike.

 This happened at the Lokoja-Abuja express way. It was gathered that his driver was trying to avoid a collision with Kogi State Governor's convoy, as one the Governor's drivers abruptly turned to Prof. Iyayi vehicle's lane. 

 Prof. Iyayi wasn't the only victim of accident as some members of ASUU, Benin Zone, were with him. However, Only Prof. Iyayi has been confirmed dead.

NOT ALL ASUU MEMBERS WANT TO CALL OFF STRIKE

The outcome of ASUU meeting indicated that there was disagreement on the need to call off the strike

 ASUU had a meeting yesterday, while the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting will hold tomorrow in one of the northern universities. The outcome of the union’s congresses indicated that there was disagreement on the need to call off the strike.

  While some ASUU chapters were ready to suspend the strike in the light of the President’s intervention, others insisted that they will continue the strike due to what they described as their distrust for the government.

 It was learnt that while the University of Lagos, UNILAG, resolved to suspend the strike, chapters like the University of Ibadan, UI; University of Benin UNIBEN; University of Calabar, UNICAL; University of Jos, UNIJOS and the Lagos State University, LASU, said the strike must continue, arguing that the Federal Government could not be trusted to fulfil its promise of injecting over N1.1 trillion to universities in the next five years.

 At Lagos State University, LASU, one of the executive members of ASUU, says: “After our congress, which lasted several hours, it was the resolve of our chapter that the strike should not be called off, because we are uncomfortable with the fact that the Federal Government has said that ASUU will just be a monitoring officer, while the Minister of Education will be the implementation officer.

 “We argued that we must be part and parcel of how the funds are managed and what they have earmarked for within the period of five years.

 “How can we know if the Ministry of Education and other authorities are prudently spending the funds for the proposed projects if ASUU is not part of the management committee? So, our position is that the strike should not be called off.”

 Members of ASUU at the University of Jos, UNIJOS voted in favour of the continuation of the strike. 194 members voted for the strike to continue while 80 voted for a suspension.

 Those who spoke in favour of the strike to continue wondered why the strike should be called off on the basis of pleas and verbal promises by the president, when the government is allegedly reputed for not to honoring agreements.

 They were said to have argued that the suffering by students and members in the last four months would be a waste if something concrete did not come out of the strike to improve the situation in universities

WALE TO VISIT NIGERIA FOR ICE PRINCE'S CONCERT

 Wale Folarin will be coming to Nigeria this November, as a guest of Ice Prince's Concert 

 The Maybach Music Group recording artiste had announced weeks ago, that he’s making a trip here. But he didn’t divulge details. It has now been confirmed that Wale will be coming for Ice Prince's Fire Of Zamani album concert which holds on November 23, 2013.

 The concert will also feature another international artiste – UK rapper Chip (formerly known as Chipmunk).

 Both artistes collaborated with Ice Prince on the FOZ album. Other big names who’ll be performing at the concert include label mate M.I Abaga, Don Jazzy, Olamide and Burna Boy; as well as Sunny Neji, Yung L, Ruby, Morell, Jeremiah Gyang, DJ Caise and DJ Edu.

PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN HONOURS THE UNDER-17 WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS WITH ₦2M EACH

  The Federal Government is to give each player in Nigeria's Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets the sum of two million Naira each.

 President Goodluck Jonathan made the announcement at a reception in the presidential villa in honour of the Golden Eaglets.

 The Golden Eaglets won the just concluded FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates by defeating defending champions Mexico by 3-0 in the final on Friday, November 8, and The President had promised them a heroes’ welcome “in appreciation of the great honour and glory they have brought to their fatherland...” he said.

 The financial reward is not limited to the players; the head coach of the team would be given the sum of 3million Naira, while the assistant coach gets the sum of 2.5million Naira. While others members of the team receives five hundred thousand Naira, three hundred thousand Naira and two hundred thousand Naira respectively. 

 Speaking at the reception, President Jonathan said this is a golden era in Nigerian sports and assured that his administration would provide the enabling environment for the Golden Eaglets to thrive and be the best in the world.

Miley Cyrus lit up a joint while accepting her award for best video at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Amsterdam on Sunday. She was given the honor (her first-ever EMA) for "Wrecking Ball" and wasn't shy about smoking on stage during her acceptance speech. 

 Miley arrived in true Miley fashion for her night at the EMAs. She was clad in a revealing minidress — emblazoned with photos of Biggie and Tupac — and thigh-high Tom Ford boots for the red carpet.
